Ormiston Walkathon: Day 1

A feisty bunch of walkers headed southbound out of Moose Jaw at 6 am. Today, our group consisted of 10 core walkers and two short-distance guest walkers. We trekked until 2 pm, after travelling a distance of 31 kilometres. We were well fed and watered thanks to our support crew, who delivered breakfast, lunch and beverages throughout the day. In the afternoon, we were shuttled back to our central location of Wakamow Valley, where we’ve spent the rest of the day with our feet up. Tomorrow, 10 walkers destined for Ormiston will depart from Conn’s Corner at 6:30 am, joined by more guest walkers. All are welcome to walk with us at any point along the way.

Today, the Moose Jaw Times-Herald covered the 2017 walkathon, and reflected back on the walkathon from 50 years ago. Check out the story, here.

Here are some photos from our first day on the road:

  1. It was a blast to be at the start line of this journey as a short distance guest walker for the first 9 miles/15 kms. The time went by so quickly as we reminisced about the past and caught up with friends not seen in years. Walk safe; enjoy the view from the rolling hills on Highway 36; and then the final 6 miles from CV to Ormiston.

  2. So how far did you guys get today? I’m assuming Shumachers or thereabouts. We’re wondering if you have any idea what time and place we should hook up with you in Crane Valley. We can drive out there in the morning and wait at a designated Crane Valley location to join you… or if you have no idea what time, it might almost be worth it to go out there and sleep overnight tonight. Which we could do quite comfortably, we have foamies, blankets, pillows etc…

  3. Hi Susan, I was told they are starting Thursday morning at 7 AM at Schumacher’s Hill, and should hit Main Street in Crane Valley about 10:30.

    1. Awesome, thanks! We’ll leave Moose Jaw 9ish in the morning then 🙂

  4. Well done guys and a delight to get to know you. …It was a bit of a quiet run I would think in 1967 with 4 boys and probably a few cans of beans, chips, water, and ice cream bars along the way to Moose Jaw.
50 years later 2017 it was a marathon of a walk with the Ricky Rocket , food cars in and out of Moose Jaw, scooters, trucks, and dogs born along the road. .With folks from across the country all ending with a huge barbecue welcome at Ormiston’s convention center( ok community hall). Only in Saskatchewn would this happen!
